Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza have locked themselves into an escalating firefight, launching scores of bombings and reprisal attacks in violence sparked by a botched Israeli special forces raid miles inside Gaza on Sunday evening. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said it had blown up sites used for civilian purposes, such as the Hamas-run television building Al-Aqsa and a structure it said was used for military purposes but also housed a kindergarten.

Sinkhole swallows woman in China | Guardian News

A woman is lucky to be alive after being swallowed whole by a sinkhole that opened up beneath her feet. In the CCTV video captured in Lanzhou City in Gansu Province on Sunday, the pavement suddenly collapses as the woman walks along. She is seen disappearing into the hole. According to reports, the woman was rescued and sent to hospital. Her ribs were broken but her life was in no danger. The case was being investigated by authorities.

Climate activist daubs graffiti on UK government building in London protest | Guardian News

Environmental protesters have daubed the windows of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy  in London in an attempt to provoke their arrests. One protester climbed above the revolving doors of the department on Victoria Street, Westminster, and wrote 'frack off' in black spray paint. The vandalism came as police started to remove protesters who had superglued themselves to card entry gates inside the staff entrance to the building as part of an anti-fracking protest. The protest is intended to be the first in a series continuing throughout the week and culminating with a mass civil disobedience action on Saturday, which activists are calling 'rebellion day'.
