“Top 5 Biggest Sharks in the World”

Welcome to another video. Today, we’ll be taking a look at one of the monsters of the ocean; Sharks. Sharks are the dominant species in the ocean and reign supreme. They are a perfect combination of speed, power, and sharp teeth. They are a usually threat to other animals of the ocean and even man. However, as dangerous as these animals can be we have different sharks species in the world. This means that we have these “predators” with different physical features. And for the purpose of this episode, we’ll be taking a look at the largest sharks in the world.

Number 5: Bluntnose Sixgill Shark – 15.8 Feet

At the bottom of the list is the Bluntnose Sixgill Shark. Just like its name suggests, this creature has six pairs of gills on either side of a broadhead. It also has a long tail and comb-like teeth. The dorsal fin of the bluntnose shark is also located close to the tail. This shark is capable of growing up to 4.8 meters long and weight 580 kilograms.

Number 4: Greenland Shark – 21 Feet

The Greenland shark can grow to shocking lengths of about 6.5 meters and without a doubt, is one of the largest in the world. They weigh 900 kilograms and are typically slow while moving in the water. This sluggish shark possesses unique features that distinguish it from other sharks such as varying coloration, dissimilar teeth, and interesting fins.

Number 3: Great White Shark – 26. 2 Feet

Without doubt, you’ve heard about one of the fiercest predators of the ocean; the great white shark. The shark is a member of Chondrichthyes class but is reputed to be a “man-eater”. Its massive body can grow more than 7 meters and an adult great white shark can weigh as much as 3,500 kilograms. Characteristic features of the shark include; pointed narrow snout, two pectoral fins, a crescent-shaped caudal fin, and a triangular dorsal fin. In its mouth, you’ll find rows of serrated teeth and can open it’s mouth as wide as 1.12 meters.

Number 2: Basking Shark – 40.4 Feet

The second-largest sharks in the world are tee Basking Shark. Now, these are sharks you don’t come across every day while taking a swim at the beach. It belongs to the order Lamniformes. The most noticeable feature of the Basking Shark is its mouth which can be open as wide as 1 meter. They are also known to have skin on their back and white on the belly. It’s pectoral and dorsal fins can span up to two meters longs. The shark has a unique liver which also contributes to its buoyancy. Basking Sharks have a squalene rich liver which equals a quarter of the shark’s body weight. The sharks can grow up to 8.8 meters and weight 6,000 kilograms.

Number 1: Whale Shark – 41.5 feet

At the top of the list are whale sharks. They can grow up to an astonishing 20 meters and weigh as much as 12,500 kilograms. It has a fusiform body that is broad in the midsection and narrows towards the head and tail. Its head is flat and wide with tiny eyes at the front. Its a large mouth which is located at the snout is filled with 300-350 rows of teeth and ten pairs of pads for filtering food. A whale shark can open its mouth up to 1 meter wide. These sharks bear the same physical features with most pelagic sharks with has one pair of pectoral fins, one pair of dorsal fins and a caudal fin. The skin is blue-grey colored on the back and white on its belly.

Whale sharks are found in all the tropical and temperate seas around the world, except the Mediterranean. They dominate the waters found in countries like Mexico, the Philippines, Australia, Ecuador, South Africa, and Belize. Whale sharks are known to feed mostly on plankton. They feed majorly by suction and filtration. Sometimes, they also feed on smaller animals such as jellyfishes, krill, squids, anchovies, crabs and sardines.
